Odes and Sonnets Clark Ashton Smith 9781141607167 Books

This is a book of poems originally published by The Book Club of California in 1918. It includes an introduction by the poet George Sterling, and has black and white decorations by Florence Lundborg. Ulan Press reprints a copy owned by Harvard Library, and has their accessions codes on one of the pages. Ulan Press kept the book to its original format, which is how all such reprints should be. The poems are often of pagan or supernatural themes. One poem, Nero, was also the title poem of another, later collection by Smith. Smith's are exotic, erotic, ethereal, and occasionally horror. Most are evocative of times past. His poems style and themes are reminiscent of the Romantic poets of early 19th century (Byron and others). His vocabulary is often obscure but a delight to read. These days he is better known for his fantasy prose stories, but originally he was poet and he preferred to be known as a poet. A short book paged v, 28, Ulan Press added several blank pages in a large 25 1/2 x 19 cm. format. Ulan Press reprints number 91 of the original 300 printed by Taylor & Taylor of San Francisco. An excellent read.

Odes and Sonnets Clark Ashton Smith 9781141607167 Books Reviews

Description listed illustrations and there weren't any. Disappointing. Text is also formatted poorly. Content is there, albeit short. Probably better to purchase another collection.
I tend to think of writing a review of Clark Ashton Smith's poetry as kind of analogous to prosaically cataloguing all of the weird otherworld creatures, bizarre mechanisms, and inexplicable events one sees in one of Hieronymus Bosch's visions of hell. Spelling it out with plain text what you see in the painting... when you really just need to look at the painting to gain an appreciation. Like Bosch, Smith was a gifted artist who created worlds that were uniquely his own.

NOTE This edition is not complete (hence the 4 star rating). The first half of the poem "Nero" is not included; it is, however, available in a book called "The Last Oblivion" and on a website called The Eldritch Dark. Oddly, even though these 2-3 pages are missing, the page displaying the frontispiece and poet/writer George Sterling's introduction remain intact. No other pages appeared to be missing, although one or two of the "pictures" appear dimmed and greyed out (see next paragraph), though the poems on those pages appear perfectly legible.

The lines of the poems are all framed/bordered by Elizabethan-looking woodcut or charcoal-drawn patterns, depicting peacocks, vines, &c., which may or may not have been how George Sterling and the other members of the San Francisco "Bohemians" who originally published this edition in 1918 published all of their "limited edition" books. It's an unusual presentation, definitely not what you'd encounter in modern times.

It is important to remember when you read Clark Ashton Smith's poetry (as George Sterling states in his introduction) that the majority of it was written before Smith had reached the age of 20. Which makes it all the more amazing when you read poems such as the following, reprinted from this volume

"The Harlot of the World"

O Life, thou harlot who beguilest all!
Beautiful in thy house, the golden world.
Abidest thou, where Powers pinion-furled
And flying Splendors follow to thy call.

Innumerous like the stars or like the dust,
Nations and monarchs were thy thralls of yore
Unto the grave's old womb forevermore
Hast thou betrayed the passion and the lust.

Fair as the moon of summer is thy face,
And mystical with cloudiness of hair. . . .
Only an eye, subornless by delight,

Shall find, within thy phosphorescent gaze,
Those caverns of corruption and despair
Where the Worm toileth in the charnel night.

-On a final note, new readers who are unfamiliar Clark Ashton Smith may want to keep a dictionary handy, as well as an encyclopedia of classical Greek and Roman mythology. Smith was known for his use of rare words, classical references, and archaicisms in all of his writing.
