When Nicole catches her husband in bed with another woman, she doesn’t just eject him from the premises—she turns his mistress into a mouse. It’s not as if she meant to. Far as she knew, she was regular-issue human. So she’s mystified (and mortified) when Kailen, Fae-for-hire, shows up on her doorstep the next day, hits on her, and then drops this bomb she’s a Changeling, a Fae raised among mortals. The doorways between the Fae and mortal worlds have been sealed shut for a millennium, but now are opening randomly at an alarming rate, and mortals are turning up dead. Kailen’s employers believe she’s the only one who can close them. Nicole would be happy to oblige and get her life back to normal, but she’s developed a magical block. Not only does she fail to turn her husband’s mistress back into a human, she can’t do any magic unless she’s angry—and she’s only angry enough when her husband’s in the room. Before Nicole can say “I don’t believe in fairies,” she’s jumping between the Fae and mortal worlds with her soon-to-be-ex, his mousy mistress, and the Fae bodyguard she’s increasingly attracted to, trying to figure out who’s opening the doorways and why. And she’d better stay mad and learn how to use her powers quickly, because there’s a price on her head. Any magic a Changeling performs cannot be undone by another Fae, so the Fae have a simple rule for those like Nicole—kill on sight.

This was a good solid start for a fantasy series. I liked Nicole and her OCD awesomeness. It was never identified as such, but boy was she ever focused. Focused on getting ahead and being the best at her job. (Not so much as a wife). Her focusing abilities is what helped her succeed in an impossible situation when learning she was a changeling, had the ability to do magic, and a family members life was in danger. She knuckled under and prepared. And wow what a refreshing change that was. She worked to identify what she could do and how best to use it in battle. And then she practiced it!Yes, because this is a story after all, she only had three days to practice before a death match. But she wasn't a TSTL heroine! Yay for that! The more I'm remembering this story the more respect I have for our heroine.
It doesn't hurt that our heroine had very strong talent to help her find her way. Once she came in to it, it was not a trickle. Her enemies were not weak and her raw talent and her willingness to find a way to harness the talent helped her become a force to be reckoned with.
There was a lot of ground to cover in this first in the series. So there were some relationships that could have been better developed. There were some things that could have been better done. However, the important ones were done very well. This is the first story I've read in a long time where the heroine gets out of a marriage where I actually liked the guy she's leaving behind to become who she needs to be. He wasn't right for her, but we also were presented with how she wasn't right for him either. Both managed to maintain dignity and respect and that was really well done of the author. I kind of wanted her to work it out with her ex, that's how torn I was.
So we have an interesting magical world set among the Fae, with enough differences to make it unique and not like other fantasies out there. We have a heroine that is by her very nature driven and only needed a more worthy cause to focus on, we have a possible love interest and maybe even more than one, we have a strong family unit to keep her centered, and we have a unique pet! I see so much potential here to build on.
It is not as complex and intricate as some I've read (speaking of you Dresden) but oh my stars it is by no means a light weight either. I enjoyed this book and would recommend it. I will watch for more to see what Nicole's next challenge might be. And I freaking love that one of her major talents is to transform things. I mean, how cool is that? Transform a rag into a beast, or a block into a wall, or perfume into acid. Just way cool gift.

Loose Changeling A Changeling Wars Novel Volume 1 Andrea Stewart 9780692356920 Books Reviews
I really enjoyed this book. I have read Patricia Briggs, Keri Arthur, Kelley Armstrong, George RR Martin, etc. I found this to be similar to the urban fantasy that Patricia Briggs does and I thoroughly enjoyed it! I've been looking for another series to start and my only disappointment is that there is only ONE out!
I LOVE this novel. I've enjoyed fantasy fiction my whole life, and this novel satisfied my love of fantasy and my adult intellect. The author keeps you guessing without losing you in the array of details about this alternate version of reality. I stayed up too late and spent too much time staring at my phone's screen thanks to this book. )
I found Nicole to be everything I look for in an UF heroine flawed but capable, vulnerable but not weak. She has a nice balance of snark and getting-shit-done that I think is hard to pull off. Looking forward to the next one.
I liked the idea of a changeling and being so mad at your cheating husband you turn his mistress into a mouse. However there were lots of concepts and people introduced and not fully explored. The romance side was a bit of bust too. Worth reading the second but need to depth of the writing to improve.
I usually like my urban fantasy pretty dark. Loose Changeling by Andrea Stewart is both serious and funny. In this case, the humor caught just the right balance for me and enhanced the story. I love the opening and how quickly the main character (Nicole) is thrown into heaps of trouble. I liked all the layers of her obsession with her job, her failing marriage, and all the supernatural craziness thrown at her.
Other reviewers have already mentioned how action-packed this story is, but what I really like about it is how it still does a great job of balancing that action with character development. I really rooted for Nicole, even though she was a tad bitter at times (though justifiably so!). I loved that Nicole couldn’t do magic without her cheating husband around. Talk about conflict!
I’m looking forward to the next book in the series!
I just finished Loose Changeling. The ending made me briefly think of Topper (the TV show, not the movie or novel by Thorne Smith) although I did imagine the grushound to be much larger than the Kirby's dog. I gave this novel five stars but, as an almost 70 year old man who has been married for 42 years, I had a little difficulty relating to the back and forth emotions of Nicole in the love triangle. I'm sure the fault is mine, though, and not the author's. In any event, I would highly recommend this novel to almost anyone. It is a delightfully original and well-written story.
This was SUCH a fun read.
Nicole Philbin is a perfectly normal woman with a perfectly normal life desk job, house, husband. That is, until one day she catches her husband cheating on her, accidentally turns his mistress into a mouse in a fit of rage, and lands herself smack in the middle of a bunch of Fae politics she didn't even know existed. It turns out that Nicole is actually a Changeling, which means she has unique magical powers. It also means her very EXISTENCE is illegal, she's "kill on sight" for most Fae factions, her parents have been lying to her her entire life, AND she's the only one who can stop the grisly murders that have been happening.
All of the characters here are smartly and compellingly written. I LOVED the chemistry between her and Kailen, the handsome Fae bodyguard hired by her birth parents to protect her. I also loved that he's a 200-year-old man who actually comes with 200-year-old baggage. )
Really great stuff. Highly recommended if you like urban fantasy and smart banter.
